And now for something completely different... Yes. I know this isn't a culinary item, but it seemed the best gallery to put this project.
I usually do more traditional cakes but I was asked to help with a baby shower for a girl who wasn't interested in loading up on the sweets. I could see that a traditional baby shower cake wouldn't work for her.
I began looking for alternatives. Someone pointed out diaper cakes; that is, diapers arranged to look like cake layers. Cool! Not so cool was the cost! $60 and up for a nice one. Yikes! Definitely something I was going to make myself!
Pictured above is the result of a few hours fooling around. I embellished the 'cake' to go along with the Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star theme. The topper bear has an option to register the name of an actual star with the name of your baby (somewhere in the galaxy)! His fur was so soft but had sparkly filaments sprinkled throughout.
I took 1/4 inch elastic and made several large bands with it. Then I used paper newborn diapers and began wrapping them together in a spiral fashion. I used the elastic bands to hold everything together, wrapping a certain amount of diapers and then securing them and wrapping some more, etc. I used elastic bands instead of tape because I wanted it to be simple for the mommy-to-be to take it apart-- and I wanted her to be able to use all the diapers included when her baby arrived. I used about 2/3 a box of the diapers.
Then I covered the final elastic band with the decorative ribbon. This was lots of fun and completely different than anything I'd done before.
Wish I could take credit for the idea. Saw it somewhere advertised for BIG $. Didn't have it in my budget so I made it myself. Took an evening but it turned out just fine.
They loved it. The mom-to-be really liked taking it home and deconstructing it. I liked that she had something useful after the party was over.
Hope you & your sister have a blast & congrates on the niece or nephew.
